DONATE FOR PREGNANCY RELATED PELVIC GIRDLE PAIN STUDY

I am involved in a pilot research study on Pregnancy related Pelvic Girdle Pain (PPGP) at Holles Street hospital. PPGP can be very painful and debilitating, this is important research as there is no known 'cure'.

The research conducted so far has produced brilliant results, the women attending reported pain levels of 6 or 7 on arrival and in every case their pain has significantly reduced after the treatment.

The treatment involves an introduction to Pregnancy Pilates and Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) education. The research is conducted by myself, an NMH Obstetrician and colleague in UCC Neuroscience dept. The research is designed to look at the possible relationship between an imbalance in ANS and PPGP.

Patients are asked to complete questionnaires, do a movement assessment and we take cortisol swabs. They are given a copy of the Body Centering Pilates DVD (below) to practice particular exercises and attend a second session 2 weeks later.

There is no charge to the patients, funding has been applied for but it is likely that the pilot will have to be self-funded.

If you would like to contribute towards the study, you can purchase the Body Centering Pilates DVD and check the 'Donation' Box when entering your details. Any donation would be greatly appreciated!

Pilates and Pregnancy

Body Centering Pilates will help to make you physically fit for pregnancy and labour.  The exercises, heightened body awareness and the calm approach will enable you to enjoy your pregnancy and speed your return to full activity after the birth.  Body Centering Pilates focuses on good alignment and balanced muscle recruitment, this strengthens the deep core muscles and improves joint stability.  It acts as a counter balance to the natural instability caused by hormone changes which prepare the body for birth.

The Pilates Method

Mens sana in corpore sano - A sound mind in a healthy body.

“Contrology develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit” – Joseph Pilates.

Pilates referred to his method as Contrology, it is now called the Pilates Method.

Testimonials

Research on back pain clearly demonstrates the importance of core stability which must be an integral part of any rehabilitation andpreventative program. Body Centering Pilates is safe and effective for all conditions as the slow controlled movements strengthen muscles and mobilize joints without risk of injury.

After 12 months of sessions with Mags Clark-Smith I felt I was achieving my optimum centre of control and balance.
— Eileen Murphy MISCP, MCSP, MCPA, Grad Dip Sports Med (Can), Director of Dublin Spine and Sports Physiotherapy Clinic. Physiotherapist to Irish Olympic Team 1979 - 1988.
I felt SO much better after the class on Monday. A bit like a car that has had a good service and lots of oil on the joints! Even my physio remarked on my remarkably healthy and mobile state. So thank you for such a lovely class.
— Jane
